Eye Exams Q & A

What is a comprehensive eye examination?

A comprehensive eye exam includes the standard vision tests you’d expect, but it also incorporates specialized tests that evaluate the health of your eyes and different aspects of your vision.

These are a few examples of tests often included in a comprehensive eye exam:

  • Tonometry: measures pressure inside your eye
  • Visual field test: measures your peripheral vision
  • Visual acuity test: evaluates the smallest letters you can read on a standard chart
  • Slit lamp exam: uses a magnification device to examine the inside and outside of your eyes

When you have a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist at Valley Eye Professionals dilates your eyes to examine structures inside your eyes such as blood vessels and the optic nerve.

While your eyes are dilated, your optometrist can see early signs of eye problems long before you begin to develop symptoms.

With routine eye exams, conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye conditions are identified and treated before they lead to vision loss.

When should children have their eyes examined?

Vision screenings are usually performed between the ages of three and four, and when your child enters school.

When your child turns six, they need annual pediatric eye exams to monitor for vision changes and problems that develop as their eyes grow. For example, myopia (nearsightedness) is a common refractive error that may progressively worsen during growth spurts.

When should adults schedule eye exams?

If you haven’t had routine eye exams in your 20s and 30s, it’s important to schedule a comprehensive exam around the age of 40.

By the time you’re 40, early signs of age-related eye diseases are visible during a dilated eye exam.

Adults with healthy eyes should get routine eye exams based on this schedule recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology:

  • Ages 18-39 years – every 5-10 years
  • Ages 40-54 years – every 2-4 years
  • Ages 55-64 years – every 1-3 years
  • Age 65 or older – every 1-2 years

Your optometrist at Valley Eye Professionals may recommend more frequent eye exams if you have an eye problem or health condition that affects your eyes, such as diabetes.

If you notice any change in your vision or it’s time for a routine eye exam, call Valley Eye Professionals or book an appointment online.
